This is a class designed and taught by contra dance musician Clara Stickney in collaboration with callers Dela Murphy and Dugan Murphy. It is designed for contra callers who have some or lots of experience calling. If you want to build new skills and understanding for working with musicians, this is for you! This is not an introductory workshop.

  • 10:00-10:45: Discussion of best practices in caller-musician collaboration at contra events

  • 10:45-10:50: Stretch break

  • 10:50-12:00: Activities for better understanding trad music: tempo, time signature, tune typology, key, pairing tunes with choreography

  • 12:00-12:30: Lunch provided

  • 12:30-1:00: Calling practice for participants utilizing various tempos, time signatures, tune types, and keys

  • 1:00-2:00: Dealing with unexpected outcomes of caller-musician collaboration at contra events

  • 2:00-3:00: Calling practice for participants: navigating unexpected outcomes and challenges presented by musicians
